Scorekeeper
utilizes modern digital technology, advanced engineering know how, and
the encyclopedic musical knowledge of one extraordinary cinephile. Michael
McDonald, whose love of movies is matched only by his zeal for music, uses
his superior ears to restore, rehabilitate, remix, and re-master hundreds
of film and TV scores.
RESTORATION: Musical backgrounds for films shot before 1990
are on various forms of analog tape that are now decaying rapidly. Scorekeeper
has all the technical knowledge and tools to save, recondition, and transfer
these valuable musical treasures.
REHABILITATION: Many early film scores exist in mono sound
or simple stereo. Scorekeeper converts all scores to digital formats and
creates stereo as well as produces surround sound in order to bring the
music into a modern theatrical setting. Scorekeepers Hollywood facility
boasts the top software for creating multiple sonic effects and allows magic
for music that never existed before.
REMIX: Michael McDonald has engineered, mixed, and mastered
thousands of albums, Broadway librettos, and movie scores. Although Michael
has his high tech equipment, he believes that it is not the kitchen that
creates the magic, but the skill of the chef.
CLIENTS: For over eight years, Scorekeeper has serviced the
restoration and re-mastering needs of Laser Light Music. Their library consists
of The Great American Songwriter series which includes FRED ASTAIRE, DORIS
DAY, JUDY GARLAND, GEORGE GERSHWIN, LENA HORN, AL JOLSON, & DINA SHORE.
Laser Lights American Legend series came to Scorekeeper with
collections that needed re-working by JUDY GARLAND, ENRICO CARUSO, BOB WILLS,
PEARL BAILEY, MARLENE DIETRICH, BILLIE HOLIDAY, BING CROSBY, BESSIE SMITH,
HANK WILLIAMS, BURL IVES, ETHEL WATERS, AL JOLSON, BILL HALEY, JOBIM, LOUIS
ARMSTRONG, AND GLENN MILLER.
The
historical references to early Broadway helped when Michael McDonald was
the engineer of choice for new cast albums which included HER FIRST ROMAN,
SARDIS, BILLY BARNES DIVAS, 9 RUE DANTIN THE LEGEND OF CAMILLE,
AND UNSONG SONDHEIM. These shows ranged in instrumentation from midi composition
to 30 piece orchestras.
NEW FILM MUSIC: At Scorekeepers home base, a studio in Hollywood
called Private Island Trax, the film industry has an affordable scoring
stage with engineers specially trained for film and TV music. In fact,
the film scoring classes for two major University music departments (UCLA
and USC) are held at Private Island Trax. Michael McDonald is also an
advisor for audio post to the students at American Film Institute.
MAJOR FEATURE FILMS: Portions of the soundtracks of many movies
are tracked and mixed at Private Island Trax under the auspices of Scorekeeper,
Michael McDonald. Movies include THAT THING YOU DO, SUMMER SCHOOL, RUTHLESS
PEOPLE, LITTLE NIKITA, THE BLACK CAULDRON, GREMLINS 2, COUNTRY, TOTAL
RECALL, WHITE MEN CANT JUMP, RAPID FIRE, BOYS IN THE HOOD, NEVER
CRY WOLF, & MENACE TO SOCIETY.
20th
CENTURY FOX: has exclusively hired Scorekeeper to re-mix a unique
collection of their most famous films. Particularly challenging were the
tracks from famous films like THE FRENCH CONNECTION (an all jazz score),
BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES, ALIENS (atonal style), and CLEOPATRA (one
hundred piece orchestra).
PARAMOUNT PICTURES: The recent DVD release of the Directors cut
of STAR TREK THE MOTION PICTURE was a particular thrill for
Michael McDonald to mix. The Jerry Goldsmith score was wall to wall.
Also, Mike is deeply interested in the science fiction subject matter
and greatly honored to be chosen for the job, with the legendary director
Robert Wise
